PUB001 Music Publishing Workshop

Course Description:

This workshop will consist of 2 classes both 5 hours each. If you are an artist, songwriter, or label owner this class will provide a wealth of invaluable knowledge. Some but not all of the topics to be covered are the following:

  • How to register songs with PROs (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC)
  • Which PRO is right to choose for each writer
  • Formation of a Publishing Company
  • What income to expect from various sources (Digital Sales, traditional sales, spins on radio, streams, synch to film/TV etc.)
  • How does publishing differ in countries around the world and compared to US
  • Being Proactive vs. Reactive on your publishing assets
  • Pros and Cons of selecting a major publisher vs. an indie publisher
  • Administration vs. Co-Publishing - what is the difference for a songwriter and a publisher
  • Understanding Music Publishing Contracts and its defining terminology
  • How to share copyright shares between songwriters
  • Producer vs. Songwriter - which makes more money?
  • Controlled Composition Clauses and statutory rates - explanation of each and how it impacts a songwriter
  • Getting a publishers attention. How to do it and how not to do it!
  • Royalties and Income participation of managers, attorney and potential team members
  • What kind of licensing companies exist to assist unknown songwriters
  • Trade Groups / Associations to potentially work with
  • Income tracking
  • Creative Licensing


All classes and workshops enrollment will be limited to 7 students or less.
